Firemen prepare for their deployment on August 17, 2026 in Kalterherberg near Monschau, western Germany, close to the border with Belgium. According to official reports, the fire in the Hohes Venn (High Fens, Hautes Fagnes) nature reserve in Belgium is no longer spreading towards the German border. "The wind is blowing in a favourable direction and the current rainfall is helping to contain the spread," said Tony Hosmans, head of crisis communications for the Governor of the Province of Lige, on Monday, August 17, 2026. Much-needed rain brought some respite Monday to firefighters on their fourth day battling Belgium's worst wildfire in a century, which has scorched vast expanses of nature reserve on the German border. Europe has been swept by weeks of devastating wildfires fuelled by dry conditions and a historically hot summer that has already contributed to the deaths of thousands of people.
